The Eastern Province has its own character when it comes to shipping. There are flats in the Khobar towers along the Corniche, spacious villas across Dammam, gated compounds with their own entry rules, and families who move between the Eastern Province and the UAE all the time. So this page is not generic advice about shipping to the UAE. It explains what is particular to Dammam: where we collect from, how furniture comes out of a tower in Khobar or a villa in Al Faisaliyah, why your car moves faster than one starting in the west, and what to do if you live in Qatif or Jubail.

The route from Dammam to the UAE and how long it takes

The only land crossing between the Kingdom and the UAE is Batha, which faces Ghuwaifat on the UAE side. Al Rahwan’s trucks leave Dammam heading south on the highway that passes through the Al Ahsa region and then continue to Batha. In other words your shipment does not cross the whole Kingdom, as it does from the western cities, but only a comparatively short stretch of it, and that is the secret behind the difference in time and cost.

On the Saudi side the shipment is registered on Fasah, the ZATCA platform, and on the UAE side entry formalities are completed with Abu Dhabi Customs at the Ghuwaifat crossing. The Al Rahwan team deals with these steps together with the customs broker. All we need from you is correct details and a clear list of contents.

From Dammam to Expected time Note
Abu Dhabi and Al Ain 2 to 3 days Closest to the Ghuwaifat crossing
Dubai 2 to 3 days The most requested destination from the Eastern Province
Sharjah and Ajman 2 to 3 days About half a day after Dubai
Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah 3 to 4 days Northern and eastern emirates
Car to any emirate 3 to 5 days Waits for the carrier to fill
Small parcel 48 to 72 hours Leaves on the nearest shared departure
Shipping truck leaving Dammam on an industrial highway towards the Batha crossing
A loaded truck leaving Dammam and heading south towards the Batha crossing

There is another practical reason Dammam is faster. Many of the shipments we collect in the Eastern Province are loaded on the day of collection or the day after, so they do not sit in the warehouse waiting for a load to fill from a distant city. And the closer a city is to the border, the fewer stops there are and the fewer chances of delay on the road.

When does a shipment get delayed?Delays rarely come from the road. They come from missing paperwork or from a prohibited item found at inspection. Send us the photos and the list of contents before collection and the journey will run as we planned it.

Dammam and Eastern Province areas we collect from

The Eastern Province is not one city but a string of neighbouring ones, and each has a housing pattern that changes how we collect. We match the vehicle to the district, so we do not send a large truck into a narrow lane or a small van to a villa with a full set of furniture.

City Example districts Type of collection
Dammam Al Faisaliyah, Ash Shati, Al Hamra, Ar Rawdah, Al Mazruiyah, An Nur, Uhud Villas and family flats, mostly wide streets
Al Khobar Al Aqrabiyah, Ath Thuqbah, Ar Rakah, Al Yarmouk, the Corniche Towers with lifts and building permission
Dhahran Ad Dawhah Al Janubiyah, Ad Danah Al Janubiyah, Al Haras Al Watani, Al Qusur Compounds, students and relocating staff
Qatif Qatif, Saihat, Safwa, Tarout, Anak Houses, villas and old lanes in some districts
Jubail Jubail Al Balad, Jubail Industrial City, Al Fanateer Staff housing and compounds, delivery by appointment
Khobar towersWe book the service lift with the tower management before loading day and protect the walls and floors before any piece comes out.
Dhahran compoundsGated compounds ask for workers’ names and the entry time in advance, so we send those details before we arrive.
Dammam villasMore room for the truck, so loading can be finished in a single day even for a full villa.
Qatif and JubailWe collect from your home, or consolidate a small shipment in Dammam and add it to the next departure.

For families moving from Qatif or Saihat, it usually works best for us to send the packing team to the house on the morning of collection, after which the truck goes on to Dammam to join the load. Jubail lies further north than the others, so we give it a fixed appointment rather than same-day collection, and we suggest combining shipments with neighbours or colleagues if there is more than one household in the same compound.

What is different about shipping from Dammam

The first thing you notice shipping from the Eastern Province is that the weather sets the rhythm of the work. In the summer months the heat and humidity on the coast reach a level that tires the crews and harms furniture, so we start loading early in the morning, avoid the midday hours, and make sure wooden pieces and mattresses are never left standing in the sun on the pavement. On the days when dust storms pass through the region we postpone open-air loading and finish the wrapping inside the house or the warehouse until the dust settles.

The second is the customers. The Eastern Province is full of employees of large companies, contractors and families who move according to contract end dates and the start of the school year, so requests bunch up at certain times. Anyone who knows their moving date early and books with us a week or two ahead gets the slot they want, and anyone who leaves it late may have to wait for an extra departure. That does not mean we turn away urgent requests, but booking early opens more options and lowers the cost.

The third is the closeness we have mentioned. Dammam and Al Khobar sit on the main road running south towards Al Ahsa and the border, which lets us join a Khobar shipment to a Dammam shipment and a Dhahran shipment on one departure instead of three, and that shows in your price.

Shipping prices from Dammam to the UAE

The prices Al Rahwan publishes for Dammam are the same as for every other city, and all of them are starting prices. The final figure is set once we know the district, the floor, the weight or volume and the emirate of delivery, and you receive an itemised quote rather than a single figure with no explanation.

We do not set a fixed per-kilo price for air freight, because it changes with the airline route, the season and the dimensions. It is explained in its own section below.

Moving furniture from Dammam, Khobar and Dhahran step by step

Furniture in the Eastern Province faces two main problems: the humidity that comes off the Gulf in summer, and the fine dust that gets into everything. So the Al Rahwan team does not simply wrap a piece in a cover. It chooses the cover to suit the piece. Wood is cleaned and left to dry before wrapping, leather gets a cloth layer under the plastic, and mattresses go into sealed bags so road dust cannot reach them.

Size of move Price from What we normally do
Room or studio SAR 1,300 Loaded in half a day
Small flat SAR 2,500 A crew of 3 and one day
Full flat SAR 4,100 A crew of 4 to 5
Villa SAR 8,300 One to two days with dismantling and assembly
  1. We start with a visit or a video call to count the pieces and decide what is dismantled and what travels whole.
  2. For large villas the packing crew arrives a few hours ahead of the truck, so the truck is never kept waiting.
  3. We dismantle beds, wardrobes and large tables, and put the screws in a bag taped to the piece itself.
  4. We wrap glass and mirrors in protective layers with rigid separators, number every piece and record it on a list.
  5. We strap the load inside the truck and fill the gaps so nothing shifts on the road.
  6. We photograph the condition at collection and at delivery, so you have proof of the state of every piece.

In Khobar in particular, the usual problems are the booked lift and the limited entry hours. In Dammam villas it is the upper floor and the narrow internal staircase that a full sofa cannot pass through. The answer in both cases is to tell us before the appointment, so we bring ladders or the right tools instead of discovering the problem with the truck already standing outside.

Appliances and air conditioners

Homes in the Eastern Province have plenty of split air conditioners, and they are among the items customers ask about most. We remove the indoor and outdoor units, seal the pipe connections, wrap each unit in its own cover and fix it upright in the truck. Fridges and washing machines are drained and their hoses disconnected, and they are left for a few hours before moving. Televisions go in their original boxes if you still have them, or in thick foam, and travel upright.

Crockery and fragile items

Plates, glasses and ornaments are wrapped one by one in soft paper and packed in double-wall cartons with dividers, and each carton is marked fragile with an arrow showing which way up it stands. These cartons are never stacked beneath others. They go in the highest part of the load.

Car shipping from Dammam to the UAE

With Al Rahwan, a car goes from Dammam to the UAE on a carrier. It is not driven along the road. That protects the odometer and the tyres and avoids the accidents a long drive can bring. The car is wrapped and covered with a protective cover before loading, we photograph it from every side in front of you or whoever you authorise, and then its wheels are strapped down on the carrier.

Car Shared carrier Open flatbed Enclosed carrier
Sedan 1,100 1,650 —
SUV 1,400 2,050 —
Luxury or classic — — 2,300

The shared carrier is the cheapest, but it waits for its load to fill, which can add a day or two. An open flatbed suits anyone who wants a faster date at a reasonable price. The enclosed carrier is for luxury and classic cars and any car that should not face road dust. Cars in the Eastern Province are mostly four-wheel-drive and family models, so most of what we carry is an SUV on a shared carrier.

The process begins in the loading yard with an inspection of the car, photographs and a note of the odometer reading, followed by a signed receipt. When the car reaches the UAE we repeat the inspection and the photographs in front of the recipient before the delivery is signed. If any damage happens on the road, the photographs from both ends are the reference we work from with you, which is why we never skip them, even on urgent shipments.

  • Remove personal belongings and anything easy to steal from the car.
  • Leave only a little fuel in the tank.
  • Record any existing scratches before loading, and we will document them in photographs with you.
  • Tell us if the car is modified or lowered, because ramps differ.
  • Have the car registration and the owner’s ID ready, and an authorisation if the person handing it over is not the owner.

Cartons and personal belongings from Dammam

Most people who send cartons from Dammam are employees moving to a new job in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, returning students, and families sending things to relatives. Cartons either come to Al Rahwan’s warehouse in Dammam or we collect them from your door, and they leave on the next shared departure, which from Dammam comes round quickly.

  • Use new or sturdy reinforced cartons, because weak second-hand ones collapse under the load.
  • Put the heavy items at the bottom and the light ones on top, and keep each carton under 30 kg.
  • Wrap electronics in their original boxes if you still have them, or in bubble wrap.
  • Seal perfumes and liquids in tight bags and keep them away from clothes.
  • Write a short list on every carton and number it so you can match it at delivery.

When shipping by the kilo we charge the higher of the actual and volumetric weights, so half-empty bulging cartons cost more than you expect. Filling the gaps with clothes saves you more than you might think.

Commercial shipping from Dammam: pallets, containers and full trucks

Dammam is an industrial and commercial city, ringed by industrial areas, warehouses and distribution companies. From here spare parts, dry food, light equipment, contracting supplies and retail goods go to the UAE. They can travel on pallets, in containers or on a full truck, depending on volume, and Al Rahwan’s prices start from SAR 740 per pallet, SAR 2,300 for a 20 ft container, SAR 3,500 for a 40 ft container and SAR 6,500 for a full trailer.

Size When it suits you Price from
One pallet A small amount of goods or large samples SAR 740
20 ft container A medium shipment for an importer or shop SAR 2,300
40 ft container Large quantities and light goods SAR 3,500
Full trailer A large, regular commercial shipment SAR 6,500

Commercial shipments need a commercial invoice, a packing list and the importer’s details and commercial registration. For anyone who ships regularly, we recommend fixing one weekly day for collection from the warehouse, so shipping becomes a routine that costs no extra time.

Large commercial containers have a second option besides the road: sea freight from King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam to Jebel Ali Port in Dubai. This option is for commercial containers only, and suits an importer who is not in a hurry and works with a warehouse near the port. Furniture, cartons and private cars go by road, because the route through Batha is faster and simpler.

Dates and food

The Eastern Province is known for the dates of Al Ahsa and Qatif, and among the things most often sent to the UAE are cartons of dates for gifts and occasions, as well as commercial quantities for shops and sweet makers. Factory-packed dates travel on the normal departures when the quantity is personal, while heat-sensitive food and commercial quantities need a refrigerated truck and papers showing the product and its expiry date. These are arranged with Al Rahwan a few days ahead so the right truck can be booked.

Office and organisation moves

Alongside private customers, Al Rahwan moves office furniture, light equipment and documents from Dammam for companies, schools, medical centres and organisations opening branches in the UAE or relocating staff there. On these moves we number the furniture by floor and department, pack computers and printers individually, and schedule loading outside working hours or at the weekend so the office does not stop work. The furniture is then assembled at the new premises in the same order.

Air freight from Dammam to the UAE

For shipments that cannot wait, Al Rahwan sends by air from King Fahd International Airport in Dammam to Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah, and the shipment normally arrives within 24 to 48 hours. Air suits documents, samples, small devices and light urgent parts. It is not for furniture, cars or heavy loads. And because Dammam is so close to the UAE by road, road freight is often cheaper and more practical for medium quantities.

How air weight is calculatedThe chargeable weight is the higher of the actual weight and the volumetric weight, and volumetric = length × width × height in centimetres ÷ 6000. We do not publish a fixed per-kilo price because it changes with the route and the season, so we send you an itemised quote once we know the dimensions.

For example, a carton measuring 50 × 40 × 30 cm gives 60,000 ÷ 6,000 = 10 kg volumetric. If its actual weight is 6 kg, it is charged as 10. That is why we advise you to measure the carton properly before you ask for a price.

How to prepare your home or flat for loading day

Preparing in advance saves hours on loading day. These are the main things we ask of our customers in Dammam and Al Khobar:

  • Empty cupboards and drawers of small items and put them in cartons, because an empty wardrobe is lighter and easier to move.
  • Disconnect electrical appliances the day before, and empty and defrost the fridge.
  • Reserve a space near the building for the truck or tell the guard when it is due, because on busy Khobar streets loading is held up by parking.
  • Set aside important papers, jewellery, cash and your personal devices and carry them yourself rather than putting them in the shipment.
  • Leave the keys for locks and cabinets with whoever receives the load, or attached to the piece itself.
  • Photograph the valuable pieces before collection and keep their invoices if you have them.

Example: a family moving from Khobar to Abu Dhabi

A family lives in a four-bedroom flat in one of the Khobar towers and the father has moved to a new job in Abu Dhabi. They sent us photos of the flat, we estimated the load at the size of a full flat, and the quote started from SAR 4,100. We contacted the tower management to book the service lift for the morning, the packing crew arrived at seven and the truck two hours later. Loading was finished before noon and the truck set off south the same day, crossed Batha the next day and delivered in Abu Dhabi on the third. The family received their pieces numbered and photographed, with the inventory list in their hands to check against what arrived.

If the flat had been on a high floor with no service lift the price would have gone up, and if the family had moved only two rooms it would have come down towards the price of a room of furniture. Every figure in the quote is tied to something clear that you can discuss with us.

Documents required to ship from Dammam to the UAE

What documents do you need to ship from Dammam to the UAE? For personal belongings and furniture, the sender’s ID or iqama, a list of contents, a Fasah authorisation for the customs broker, and the recipient’s details and mobile number in the UAE are enough. Commercial goods need a commercial registration, a commercial invoice and a packing list, and a car needs its registration, its plates and an export certificate. The Al Rahwan team checks the papers with you before collection day, because a single missing document is what most often holds a shipment up at Batha.

Type of shipment Documents required Note
Personal belongings and cartons ID or iqama, list of contents, Fasah authorisation for the broker, recipient’s details and mobile number Number the cartons so they match the list at inspection
Household furniture ID or iqama, list of pieces, Fasah authorisation, delivery address A numbered inventory speeds up inspection at Ghuwaifat
Commercial goods Commercial registration, commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin on request, importer’s details A certificate of origin is required for some commercial goods
Car Car registration, plates, export certificate, owner’s ID, a letter from the bank if the car is financed, an authorisation if the sender is not the owner Unpaid traffic fines delay the export certificate
Dates and food in commercial quantities Commercial registration, commercial invoice, product details and expiry date, importer’s details Heat-sensitive food travels refrigerated

Customs at the Batha crossing and what happens to your shipment at the border

When the truck reaches Batha it enters the trucks’ yard, its details registered in advance on Fasah are presented, and it goes through customs inspection on the Saudi side. It then crosses to Ghuwaifat, where entry formalities are completed with Abu Dhabi Customs. Some cartons may be opened for inspection, or the truck may pass through X-ray scanners, which is why we advise packing that can easily be redone and a list of contents that matches what is in the cartons. For furniture, the numbered inventory is the most important document, because it speeds up inspection.

As for charges, personal belongings and the used furniture of a relocating family are treated differently from commercial goods. Any duties or taxes on a shipment depend on its type, its origin and the regulations in force at the time of shipping, and Al Rahwan’s broker sets them out in the quote before loading. The details depend on the regulations in force at the time of shipping, so the Al Rahwan team tells you before loading whether your shipment will carry any charges at Ghuwaifat, so there are no surprises at delivery.

The time may stretch a little in busy periods at the crossing, or if the paperwork is incomplete. That is a delay in time, not in the safety of the load. If your shipment is late we will tell you the real reason rather than leave you waiting without information.

What cannot be shipped from Dammam

We do not accept narcotics, weapons, ammunition, explosives, hazardous chemicals or counterfeit goods. Some restricted items have special conditions and permits, such as medicines, chilled food, large batteries, concentrated perfumes and flammable materials. If you are unsure about an item, ask us before you pack it, which is far easier than having the shipment opened at the border.

From Dammam in particular, three items come up again and again. Perfume, incense and oud oil are accepted in personal quantities, tightly sealed, while larger quantities have conditions. Dates and tinned food are accepted if they are factory-packed and in reasonable quantities. Gas cylinders and large lithium batteries do not travel with furniture, so the kitchen gas cylinder is removed before loading day, and the fuel is drained from generators and lawnmowers if you have them.

Insuring your shipment from Dammam to the UAE

Insurance with Al Rahwan is optional and is calculated on the value you declare for the contents. It is worth having for premium furniture, electronics, cars and high-value commercial goods. Before you agree, the itemised quote shows the amount of cover and what it does and does not include, because breakage caused by packing the customer did themselves, for instance, is not the same as damage that happens in transit.

Two things protect you most: a numbered inventory signed by both sides at collection, and photographs of every valuable piece before it is wrapped. At delivery, check the pieces before you sign, and if you notice any damage, note it on the delivery form and photograph it there and then, because that is what any claim is built on.

Tracking your shipment from Dammam to the recipient’s door

Al Rahwan sends an update at every stage: collection from the home or warehouse, departure from Dammam, arrival at Batha, crossing at Ghuwaifat, and dispatch for delivery in the chosen emirate. Updates come by WhatsApp or a call, and at any time you can ask where your shipment is on 0568829975 by giving your name or shipment number.

The moment customers worry about most is the wait at the crossing, because a truck can spend hours in the inspection yard. So we tell you when it reaches the crossing and when it leaves, and give you an estimated delivery time once it is through, so the recipient in the UAE can be ready rather than waiting in all day.

Storage before shipping or on arrival

Dates do not always line up. The lease on your flat in Khobar may end before your new home in Dubai is ready, or the furniture may reach Abu Dhabi while the recipient is still travelling. For these cases Al Rahwan offers short-term storage on request, either in Dammam before shipping or in the UAE after arrival, and the pieces stay wrapped and numbered exactly as they left your home until delivery day.

The storage period and its cost are set in the quote according to volume and number of days, and the furniture wrapping is not removed during storage, so it is protected from dust and humidity. We advise telling us you need storage when you book rather than on loading day, because the space has to be reserved in advance, especially at times when end-of-contract moves and the start of the school year bunch together.

Steps to ship from Dammam with us

  1. Tell us the district, the type of shipment and the emirate of delivery, and send photos if you can.
  2. We estimate the weight or volume from the photos or on a quick visit.
  3. You receive an itemised quote with an estimated collection time.
  4. We collect, wrap, inventory and photograph the items.
  5. The truck leaves Dammam heading south through Al Ahsa to the Batha crossing.
  6. Clearance is completed through Fasah and then with Abu Dhabi Customs, and the shipment enters the UAE through Ghuwaifat.
  7. We deliver to the recipient’s door and send you the delivery notice.

Payment can be made by bank transfer, by electronic payment or in cash, and the payment timing is agreed in the quote. Al Rahwan customer service is available from 7 am to 11 pm on 0568829975 by phone and WhatsApp, so if you send your photos and list in the evening, you will usually have the quote the same day or the next morning.

Delivery across the seven emirates

We deliver in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah. Abu Dhabi and Al Ain are closest to the border, so the shipment reaches them first, Dubai and Sharjah come next, and the northern and eastern emirates are at the end of the run. The more precise the address you give us, along with the entrance details for the building or villa, the faster the delivery.

The work does not end at the front door in the UAE. On furniture moves the delivery crew carries the pieces into the rooms you choose and reassembles the beds, wardrobes and tables that were dismantled in Dammam, and on request the furniture can be arranged in place for an extra charge shown in the quote. The recipient checks the pieces against the numbered inventory before signing for delivery.

How to work out your shipping cost yourself

For road freight we calculate volumetric weight by multiplying length by width by height in centimetres and dividing by 5000, then charge the higher of the actual and volumetric weights. For example, you have 5 cartons, each measuring 60 × 50 × 40 cm and each weighing 12 kg. One carton is 120,000 ÷ 5,000 = 24 kg volumetric, so 24 is the higher figure, and the five together come to 120 kg chargeable. At the starting rate of SAR 9 per kilo, the cost starts from SAR 1,080, before any extra services. If you have fewer cartons, the published parcel and carton prices above apply, and we compare them to find you the cheaper option.

The cheapest way to ship from Dammam

  • Choose a shared departure rather than a private truck. They are frequent from Dammam.
  • Combine your family’s or colleagues’ shipments into one.
  • Bring cartons to our Dammam warehouse if you are nearby, which saves the collection fee.
  • Choose a shared carrier for your car if you are not in a hurry.
  • Cut down empty space in the cartons to reduce the volumetric weight.
  • Get rid of old pieces you will not need in the UAE before packing.

Common mistakes when shipping from Dammam

Forgetting to arrange the liftIn Khobar towers, loading is delayed by hours if the lift is not booked.
Weak cartonsThey cannot bear the weight of the load above them on the journey.

Sending a large quantity by airDouble the cost, when the road is nearer and cheaper.
Delaying the car export certificateThe car waits in the yard until its papers are complete, and unpaid fines delay the certificate.

Length × width × height in centimetres ÷ 5000, and the higher of the actual and volumetric weights is charged. For example, a 60 × 50 × 40 cm carton gives 24 kg volumetric, so if it weighs 12 kg it is charged as 24.

Do you collect from Khobar, Dhahran, Qatif and Jubail?

Yes, from Dammam, Al Khobar, Dhahran, Qatif, Saihat and Jubail, including towers and compounds. We book the service lift and entry permission in advance, and small shipments from Qatif and Jubail join the next Dammam departure.

Is furniture storage available before shipping or after arrival?

Yes, short-term storage on request, in Dammam before shipping or in the UAE after arrival, with the pieces kept wrapped and numbered. The period and cost are set in the quote, and it is best requested when you book.

Can I insure and track my shipment?

Yes. Insurance is optional and based on the declared value, and you receive an update at every stage from collection to delivery by WhatsApp or on 0568829975, from 7 am to 11 pm.
